Culter cruised to an easy victory
on Tuesday 16"' August in the Grill
Cup
and now progress to the quarter finals.
With Parkvale only winning 4-1 against Forres the Deesiders won the section
on goal difference. The Champions league campaign however got off the worst
possible start with a home defeat to
United who
deservedly won the game.
Hall
Russell's United v Culter
Culter swamped Hall Russell's United at
Denmore on Tuesday 16"' August. The highlight being four goals for Roddy
Cameron. The visitors got off to a flier when Greig combined with Cameron to
set up Christie who finished with aplomb. With barely 11 minutes on the dock
Stewart made it two when he pounced on a Cameron blocked effort to thrash
the ball home. Culter kept up the relentless pressure but had to wait until
the 28th minute before increasing their tally just after
Robertson had sent a pile driver flashing over. McRitchie made the chance
for Cameron who rounded the keeper to slip the ball home. Hall's won their 15t
comer in the 315t minute but were punished a minute later
when Glass driving in from the left sent an unstoppable volley high into the
net. Culter went nap in the 3e minute when a right foot Greig hook was met
by Rattray who headed home. Cameron almost notched his second as the
pressure became relentless but his lob hit the roof of the net.
Culter continued where they left off when
a McRitchie pass was missed by Cameron and struck the inrushing Robertson
but the ball flew over the top. With only 4 minutes of the second period
gone Culter went further ahead when Cameron chased down a long ball before
rounding the keeper and sliding the ball home. Halls were given a
consolation when Glass was adjudged to have upended Rennie in the box and
Forbes stepped up to send Pirie the wrong way. Culter went further ahead in
the 65"' minute when McRitchie sent in a perfect cross for Cameron who
headed home with ease. Smith came on for Robertson and then Culter sent on
Thain for Christie before Rattray got his second when he thrashed the ball
home at the back post from a Stewa.rt comer. New signing Sim came on for his
debut replacing Glass but it was McRitchie who almost scored but Fraser
pulled off
a first class save. Cameron then had a
chance headed off the line before Sim had an effort blocked. The scoring was
complete in tF1e 39t' minute when Cameron raced through to
challenge the keeper and the ball spun into the empty net.

Culter
v Formartine United
Formartine were the first to attack but
Reid headed wide before Glass crossed at the other end but Christie took the
ball well. McRitchie then had a chance from a Cameron pass but Christie
denied him. Culter appeared to be getting into their stride early on and a
Cameron cross was scrambled away at the second attempt. The game was being
played at a frantic pace and Binnie should have opened the scoring from a
comer but headed wide. Formartine took the lead in the 28th minute
when Culter conceded a free kick wide right and when the ball was swung in
Allan's attempt at a headed clearance fell to Reid and he headed home from
an unmarked position. Culter almost got back on level terms 7 minutes later
when Cameron sprung McRitchie but the burly striker could not get the ball
past Christie. Two minutes later the Culter defence were caught napping when
Cormie stole in to make it two nil for the visitors. Culter were thrown a
life line just before the interval when Cameron was upended in the box by
Christie, who was lucky to escape with a yellow, but McRitchie failed to
convert the spot kick.
The home side looked to have pulled one
back within half a minute of the restart but the assistant Referee
flagged the frustrated Cameron for allegedly being offside. Culter kept on
plugging and almost pulled one back when a Glass free kick was met by
Rattray but the ball flew over. United had a great chance to seal the game
16 minutes into the half but Reid missed a sitter. Stewart was introduced
for Glass as Culter strived to get something but there was uproar moments
later when McRitchie was subbed for Scott. With Scott already on the pitch
McRitchie was red carded for remarks supposedly aimed at ref S. George and
to the astonishment of all Scott was asked to leave the field of play.
Manager Gray was then sent from the technical area as the match threatened
to turn into a farce. The game was over as a contest moments later when sub
Findlay snuck in behind the defence to prod the ball behind the unguarded
Pirie. In a desperate attempt Culter finally introduced Scott for Farmer and
Smith for Robertson and although they camped in the United half only Greig
came dose when his header from a
Stewart comer was cleared off the
line.
Culter: Pirie, Greig, Allan, Christie,
Rattray, Robertson, Glass, Cameron, McRitchie, Craik, Farmer. Subs: Smith,
Scott, Ord, Stewart, Sim
