Tuesday 9th August Culter 2 Parkvale 1
Saturday 13th August Culter 3 Forres Thistle 0
Versus Parkvale
In a pulsating match new Super League boys Parkvale started like a whirlwind
and caught Culter napping with Esson shooting wide from good position.
Moments later a goalbound Greig attempt hit Felber and bounced to safety.
Within the first two minutes `Vale had hit the post from a fine Brooks
effort and in the next minute a powerful Paul header from a Brooks corner
cannoned off the edge of the post and took a ricochet off a surprised Collie
and into the net. Despite the early onslaught Culter tried to get going and
Morrison found Scott with a decent ball but his attempt was blocked for a
comer. A few minutes later a good header from Scott, following a Calder
comer, edged past the post. Culter seemed to be gaining in confidence and
McRitchie had a good turn in the box but his shot was deflected out for a
comer. Culter were back on level terms in the 25th minute when a Morrison
comer fell to Glass lurking in the box and he crashed a grounder into the
back of the net. This heralded a good spell from the Deesiders and McRitchie
forced a good save from Hopkins in the `Vale goal. The visiting keeper came
to their rescue once again just before half time when he saved a powerful
Scott effort with his legs.
`Vale came out fighting at the start of the second period but both Long and
Fettes were booked by referee Gary Cheyne in quick succession. Culter almost
took the lead soon after when McRitchie fed Christie who prodded the ball to
Thain on the edge of the area but his rising effort flew inches over. The
visitors were by no means out of it and a dangerous McKay cross eluded
everyone and went out for a throw in. Calder then replaced Scott for the
home side and the oncoming player was booked for entering the playing
surface without permission. Thain had another try which flew barely wide
from a Collie pass as Culter upped the pressure. The home side sent on
Stewart and Craik for Morrison and Glass but it was Cameron who almost did
the damage with a fine cross which Long headed behind for a corner. In a
rare breakaway `Vale should have gone in front when McKay found Felbar
completely unmarked on the edge of the box but he sliced his shot wide of
the target. Stewart then Collie were then both booked as the match began to
reach the latter stages. Culter went ahead for the first time in the 82nd
minute when a superb head flick from Cameron set Craik free and he danced
into the box before smashing a low one under the keeper and into the net.
`Vale then sent on Home and the giant Keith as they tried to get something
out of the game. Pirie as so often in the past came to the home side's
rescue with a couple of minutes remaining when he saved brilliantly from a
McKay volley. `Vale were reduced to ten men in the last minute when Fettes
was given his second yellow card as Culter held on for an important victory.

McRitchie, Cameron, Glass. Subs: Stewart, Craik,

Versus Forres Thistle
Culter made several changes to the side which narrowly beat Parkvale for the
game against Moray opponents Forres and they should have won by a more
handsome margin but missed a hatful of chances. Culter were first out the
blocks and McRitchie won a corner from a Farmer cross. MacLean of Forres
then had a half chance but he headed well wide of the target. In the 12th
minute Farmer who was looking special on his season's debut then found
Rattray in the area but the skipper thrashed the ball over from good
position. Scott, who was playing up front with McRitchie then had a brave
header cleared off the line. Culter took the lead in the 21st minute when a
long ball by Greig found McRitchie free and he kept his composure to bury
the ball behind Bremner. Ten minutes later the Jags had a rare opportunity
when MacLean sent in a decent shot which just cleared the bar. A few minutes
later Farmer went flying down the line but was upended by Raebum who was
lucky to escape with a warning. Culter had the ball in the net from
Robertson in the 34th minute but referee Kerrigan had already pointed to the
spot and
Stewart stepped up to put Culter two up. Only a minute later Farmer found
Glass and his powerful effort cannoned off the post and out for a goal kick.
On the stroke of half time Scott picked up a long ball but his flashing
effort flew wide.
Culter continued their good work at the start of the second period and
McRitchie was unlucky not to add a second when his attempted cross skinned
the bar and out for a goal kick. The Jags did have an opportunity a few
moments later when a dangerous A. Ross cross was deflected by Rattray but
Pirie was alert to the danger and saved well. Culter should have gone
further in front when Christie waltzed into the box but with the goal at his
mercy he hit the ball straight at the keeper. Culter were camped in the Jags
half now and Greig almost scored from a Stewart comer but the attempt went
wide. Ord then came on for the hobbling Scott but it was Stewart who set up
McRitchie and his blistering left foot effort was magnificently saved by
Bremner. Smith then replaced Glass but it was Christie who added to the
tally when he surged into the area before sending the ball behind Bremner
and into the empty net. Craik came on for Farmer as Culter looked to add to
their tally but the Deesiders failed to penetrate the Jags defence despite a
series of golden opportunities.
Culter: Pirie, Collie, Greig, Christie, Rattray, Robertson, Glass, Stewart,
McRitchie, Scott, Farmer. Subs, Smith, Craik, Allan, Thain, Ord.
