Hermes Huff and Puff

Soccer World Super League: - Hermes 0 Culter 2 H-T 0-1
Scorers: Stewart 30, Ord 87

Culter remain eight points clear at the top of the Super League and although they
always looked comfortable.. against the home side it was far from an inspiring ~
performance in windy conditions and on a bumpy pitch. With seven league games left
in the current season grinding out results is more important than playing pretty
football.

Hermes started with the wind at their backs and were awarded a comer when Collie slipped at a vital moment. From the resultant kick Cameron did well to clear the ball to safety.  Moments later the same player set Stewart racing clear but he timed his run a little early and was caught offside. Cameron once again became provider in the 5th minute and this time  inside the area. Two minutes later Stewart fed Cameron but this
time keeper Sweeney reacted well to deny the agile striker. A few minutes later a long
Sweeney clearance was forced behind for a corner by Greig and following the flag kick Greig and Calder both had to clear the ball off the line to deny Hermes an opener. At the other end a quick Christie throw in was taken down by Stewart who twisted and turned before sending in a shot which Sweeney saved with ease. Culter were beginning to apply the pressure by now forcing Hermes to adopt a defensive policy but it almost came undone when good work by Christie and Cameron let in, Calder but his grounder was well saved by saved by Sweeney. In the 29t'hminute Culter were awarded a free kick just outside the area which Adam took but Smith of Hermes headed the ball clear to set up Shand who in turn tried to set Courage free but he was well offside. A minute later Craik.went on a run down the left and sent in a dangerous near post ball for STEWART who got in front of his man to prod the ball home.

The next phase of the game was bogged down in midfield with little positive action from both sides until Cameron got away following a long Rattray clearance and his cross was knocked behind for a corner by Watson. Hermes did break free just before half time when Smith went on a forceful run but his long range effort was easily dealt with by Pirie.

The Deesiders started positively in the second period gaining two corners in quick succession but Hermes managed to get the ball clear on both occasions. The home side then took on Strachan for the injured Shand but it was the home side who continued to dominate without setting the heather on fire. Culter did come to life in the 12t' minute of the half when Stewart chased down a long ball but his lob over the advancing keeper crept just wide. Four minutes later Stewart was set free by Cameron and with the goal at his mercy he shot straight at Sweeney from inside the area. Ord the replaced Christie as Culter sought to add to their lead but it was Craik who almost added a second when his drive from a Cameron pass whistled inches wide. Hermes then seemed to up a gear towards the end of the half but were dealt a cruel blow when a Cameron free kick was send crashing into the back of the net from a wonderful diving header by a delighted ORD. With the minutes ticking away Culter put on Thain and Davidson for Smith and Craik but the game was already won.
