Culter moved 5 points clear at the top of the Super League in a
remarkable game at a bitterly cold and windy Crombie Park. In a
match packed with incident there were two sendings off and Neil
McRitchie contrived to miss two penalties in the second period.
Turriff United and Glentanar theoretically could catch the
champions as they have games in hand but the Deesiders have the
points in the bag and have still to play Turriff at home and
Glentanar home and away.
The visitors started well and a Steel cross was sliced behind for a
corner by Craik and from the resultant kick
Sievwright headed well over. At the other end a darting Stewart
run from a Craik pass ended up being blocked by Everson. Stewart
then turned provider as he set Craik free in the box and
although he was impeded he managed to regain his footing and get
in a shot which was saved by Farquhar. Culter should have gone
in front in the 13th minute when a Stewart comer was met by the
unmarked McRitchie but his close range header sailed over the
bar. Culter were beginning to settle into a rhythm and Cameron
was unlucky when he slid in to reach an Allan cross but the ball
crept past. Out of the blue Wilson's took the lead when
Mackenzie raced into the box before cutting the ball back to
ROBERTSON who buried the ball behind the unguarded M. Pirie.
Moments later Culter had a strong penalty claim turned down when
McRitchie was downed in the box but referee Nicholson turned the
appeals down. The Deesiders kept pushing and were almost
rewarded when Cameron rounded the keeper but slipped at the
crucial moment and the chance was gone. Culter did equalise in
the next attack when good play by Allan was rewarded when he
found STEWART in the box arId he found the net with a low shot.
Craik was next to try his luck with a header from a Stewart
cross but his effort drifted wide before the same player hit the
side netting again from a Stewart pass. In a rare break 'Nilson's
were awarded a corner but Robertson headed wide from good
position.
Culter went
ahead shortly after the resumption when a Stewart pass was
cleverly held up by McRitchie who then tapped the ball to
CHRISTIE who hammered the ball home. Culter should have gone
further into the lead shortly after when good work by Cameron
let Calder in but he somehow managed to do a Lundberg and scoop
the ball over from 2 meters with the goal gaping. Culter went
further in front in the 54th minute when a Craik corner was met
by both MCRITCHIE and Rattray but the former was credited with
the goal although both players claimed it. Culter were dealt a
massive blow shortly after when Allan was dismissed for
retaliation following a poor challenge by Skinner. Wilson's
seemed to get heart from this and almost pulled one back when a
slip by Craik let in Mackenzie but he shot wide past the
advancing Pirie. Moments later Craik came to Culter's rescue
when he cleared a Lewis shot off the line. In order to tighten
up Culter sent on Greig for Christie and then Collie for Stewart
but it was Cameron who provided the ammunition for McRitchie
following a Greig pass but the burly striker missed from close
range. The big hitman was sinner again a few minutes later when
Craik was felled in the box but Farquhar saved both the penalty
and the attempted rebound. Incredibly Culter were awarded a
further penalty when McRitchie was brought down by Bruce who was
sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity. McRitchie
stepped up again and once again Farquhar saved well although the
strike was not of the best quality and from the rebound Collie
fired wide. In the dying minutes Pirie was called into action
when he held a powerful England shot.
