Culter 0 Formartine United 1 H-T 0-0
Scorer: - Reid 86
Culter lost ground in the title race with
a reverse against a youthful United side who gave as good as they got and
sneaked a victory with a last gasp winner. The Deesiders gave a home debut
to new goalkeeper Martin Pirie who came on for the injured Ivor Pirie.
Martin has signed from Elgin City and leaves as them as their longest
serving player. There however was no debut for Alain Ndomo Edene who has
joined Culter on a short term contract from ASSO Cameroon in West Africa.
Culter started brightly when Rattray got on the end of an Adam corner but
his powerful effort flew just over. Moments later the home side had another
chance when Allan found Cameron following a good run but the speedy forward
could only fire straight at Pennet from a tight angle. United then pushed
forward and from a long Ellis throw in Thain skidding header ended up in
Pirie's arms. With 14 minutes gone a neat Adam free kick was headed over by
Christie. With the half progressing Culter looked the more likely whilst
United looked dangerous on the break but it was Davidson who had an
opportunity to send in a telling cross but Maitland recovered to send the
ball behind for a corner and from the resultant kick Craik tried to connect
with the ball in the box but missed completely. In a speedy breakaway Ellis
had a chance for the Pitmedden men but he sliced well wide of target. Culter
were now playing some bonnie football but lacked penetration and hence
chances were few and far between. The home side were given what should have
been a wake up call in the 38th minute when Reid thundered a volley towards
goal but Pirie took the ball cleanly. Just on the half time whistle Stewart
sent Craik in but his grounder whistled just wide.
Culter had a chance early in the second period when Cameron burst through
but his shot lacked power and Pennet had an easy task of saving. Stewart for
once managed to wriggle free and his cross was met by Cameron but once again
Pennet was on hand to deal with the header. United then stepped up the pace
and Reid had a chance but he fired just wide on the post. In an attempt to
change the face of the game Culter sent on McRitchie for Davidson and the
big striker almost broke the deadlock when his clever header just slide by.
Culter then sent on Grant and Fraser for Collie and Christie but they still
did not look like scoring although McRitchie had a chance but he miss hit at
the vital second. Thain then decided to take matters into his own hands and
went on a terrific run but his cross was scrambled away by a relieved Batty.
It looked ominous for
Culter a few minutes later when Ellis flashed in a volley but Pirie somehow
managed to turn the ball over the bar for a corner. With a draw looking the
likely outcome United took the lead in the 86th minute when an Ellis shot
was saved by Pirie but Reid reacted to bury the ball behind the prostrate
keeper.
