Maryhill Matched
OVD Scottish Cup 3rd Round
Culter 2 Maryhill 2 H-T 1 - 0
Scorers: Culter, Stewart 21, 66. Maryhill, Cocozza 48. Dingwall 78 (pen)
Culter just failed to beat one of the Cup favourites in an enthralling
encounter at Crombie Park. The large crowd included Anne Begg the MP for the
area. It took a late penalty for the visitors to take the tie into a replay
in Glasgow on Saturday 11th December.
Culter got off to a good start McRitchie ran through before releasing
Stewart but his attempt was blocked. At the other end a Cocozza free kick
went well wide of Milne deputising for the injured Pirie in the Culter goal.
Craik then went on a surging run before finding McRitchie who crossed for
Stewart but the speedy forward headed over. As the match pruyressed Maryhill
became stronger and Christie was forced into conceding a free kick which
Baker jlas.ed well over. Culter gradually began to win the midfield battle
against a taller Maryhill engine room and Adam found Craik who in turn set
up Stewart but his well hit effort was saved by Black. With 21 minutes gone
the Deesiders took the lead in superb fashion. Adam started the move by
finding Craik who played the ball along the box to McRitchie who held the
ball up before finding STEWART and he blasted a low unstoppable shot past
Black and into the corner of the net. This seemed to lift Culter and Stewart
had a chance for his second when he twisted and turned in the box before
bringing out a fine save from Black. `Hill were far from out of it and
stormed back with Essler providing the ammunition for both Giies and
Johnstone but on both occasions they shot wide. Referee Cheyne then booked
Craik rather harshly but he almost got number two for Culter but Cocozza
stepped in at the last minute to deny him. Stewart who was causing all sorts
of problems for the 'Hill defence then had another attempt saved by Black
but at the pavilion end Milne made an outstanding save when he somehow
managed to steer away a great Essler effort. Just on the stroke of half time
Greig went on a foraging run before finding Stewart who was fouled on the
edge of the area. Adam took the free kick but the ball drifted just wide of
the post. Culter had an opportunity to increase their lead early in the
second half and again the opportunity fell to Stewart but again Black was in
the right place to deny him. Maryhill were thrown a lifeline when McGuiness
shot and despite a great save from Milne COCOZZA was on hand to knock home
the rebound. This set up an exciting period of play with both teams
searching for a winner and Cameron could have provided it for Culter with a
surging run into the box and his pass to McRitchie saw the burly striker
flash a shot inches over. The visitors then started a period of domination
without really threatening but Culter had strong claims for a penalty turned
down when Wilson appeared to handle
deliberately. The Culter contingent went ballistic in the 66th minute when a
fine run and cross by McRitchie found the head of STEWART who bulleted a
fine header into the back of the net. For the next few minutes play pulsed
from end to end and the crowd were appreciating the openness of the game. In
an attempt to get something out of the match 'Hilt brought on Gallacher and
Watret for Johnstone and McGuiness. With 78 minutes gone `Hill were back in
it when they were awarded a soft penalty and DINGWALL stepped up to send
Milne the wrong way to equalise the scoring. In the last few minutes there
was further controversy when Craik was sent packing for a second bookable
offence but it took and absolutely first class save from Milne to deny 'Hill
what would have been an undeserved victory.
