2-0
Saturday
14th August: - Longside 3 Culter 1 H-T 1-0
Dufftown Match: Culter completely trounced their North counterparts in the
opening fixture of the League Cup. The score could have been more but for
some fine keeping from Whyte, in the Highlanders goal, and some
uncharacteristically poor finishing from Neil McRitchie.
The game was evenly contested in the opening minutes but the Deesiders had
an opportunity when Ord shot but Whyte saved well. Ewen then had a snap at
goal but his effort drifted wide. Culter took the lead in 7th minute when a
long through ball from Greig found Stewart who raced clear to send the ball
beyond the keeper and into the net McRitchie then had a couple of
opportunities but he forced good saves from Whyte. It was Cameron's tum next
from an Ord pass but once again Whyte saved well. The home side took a two
goal lead in the 42st minute when Stewart sent a short free kick to Cameron,
who took a touch, sidestepped his marker and sent a screamer into the top
comer.
Cameron
trned provider with just 3 minutes gone in the second period when he sent in
a super cross to Stewart who bulleted a diving header into the net. Barely
two minutes later Town were in a state of collapse when Ord released Cameron
who buried in number four. McRitchie eventually got himself on the score
sheet when with the deftest of touches he turned in a Stewart cross
following good lead up play from Cowell. Culter then started to make some
substitutions but it did not affect the pattern of play and this time
Cameron did the damage with number 6 from a McRitchie pass. The rout was
completed a few minutes before the end when McRitchie netted from a Cowell
pass.
Culter. Pirie; Thain, Greig, Cowell, Rattray, Adam, Stewart, Calder,
McRitchie, Cameron, Ord; Substitutes: Davidson, Smith, Collie, Fraser,
Grant, Milne.
Longside Match: Culter came a cropper at Davidson Park and now look to have
no chance of qualifying for the quarter final stages of the Grill League
Cup. Despite having virtually all the pressure the Deesiders failed to
capitalise.
In the very first minute Longside took the lead when Stephen turned Greig on
the edge of the area and sent a screamer beyond Pirie into the top comer.
Pirie redeemed himself a few moments later when he held a Chalmers attempt
before Culter forced their way back into it and a quick Adam free kick went
agonisingly wide with Grant stranded. McRitchie then almost got the visitors
on level terms when he beat the offside trap but his deft lob sneaked beyond
the post. Culter then won a series of comers from persistent play but they
failed to find the target. Culter might have had a penalty in the 21st
minute when McRitchie met a Calder flick on but referee Burrows booked the
striker for simulation. McRitchie almost got one on target with a header
from a Cowell cross but the ball sneaked over with Grant stranded. In a rare
attack Longside were presented with an opportunity by a static defence but
Ritchie could only shoot wide from good position. Stewart then provided the
ammunition for McRitchie with a neat cut back but the final shot was blocked
by a resolute Longside defence. Rattray almost got the equaliser deep into
time added on from a Stewart comer but he headed wide.
Longside lived dangerously at the start of the second period as Culter
stepped up the pressure but some bold defending kept their goal intact.
Longside did almost increase their lead 9 minutes into the half but Rattray
intervened to avert the danger. However a minute later Culter were in
trouble when Pirie attempted to punch a corner clear but the ball dropped
for Fraser well inside the area and he hammered the ball home through a ruck
of players. That should have signalled the end for Culter but they kept
pushing and Calder was unlucky to see his shot cleared off the line by
Wisely but the goal was not long in coming. Cameron found Cowell racing into
the area and he was upended as he entered the box and McRitchie stepped up
to send the keeper the wrong way. Cowell was beginning to get forward to
good effect and another good cross was met by Cameron on the turn but his
effort sailed over. The home side went down to ten men when M. Reid was sent
packing for elbowing Rattray. Culter kept huffing and puffing towards the
end but could not firrd a way through and they were dealt a sucker punch in
time added on when Stephen turned in the box to fire past the exposed Pirie.
Culter. Pirie; Thain, Greig, Cowell, Rattray, Adam, Stewart, Calder,
McRitchie, Cameron, Ord. Subs: Craik, Davidson, Smith, Fraser, Grant and
Milne
