Gowfers Draw Challenge Match:
Culter 2 Carnoustie Panmure 2 H-T 0-2
Culter
staged a remarkable comeback to achieve a creditable drawn against the OVD
Scottish Cup holders Carnoustie Panmure. The match was billed as the 3rd and
4th place play off for
the Super Cup but was in fact no more
that a preseason friendly, which was played in good spirit with
-some fine football on display.
The early exchanges were fairly even but Peter 5tewart carved out an opening
for him with a run and shat which was deflected
for a comer. Culter were then awarded a free kick
on the edge of the area which Peter Stewart fired high and wide. The Gowfers
gradually began to open up the game with their sleek passing and both Murray
Rattray and Chris Collie had to be alert to stem the tide. The visitors took
the lead in the 23rd minute with a defence splitting move. Ralph
Brand found space in the box and squared the ball for Murray McDowell who
netted from close range. Despite this setback Culter strove to move the ball
about and Colin Craik did well to beat several men before passing to Duncan
Ord but the compact strikers shot was blocked by Steven Narey. The Gowfers
went two up in the 25th minute when Colin Craiks clumsy challenge
on Jonathan Kelly saw the award of a penalty. Murray McDowell stepped up and
sent Russell Milne the wrong way from the spot. Colin
Crack suffering from the reoccurrence of an old injury had to be replaced by
fit again Bruce Smith but the Angus side continued to press forward and
Jonathan Kelly was unlucky to see his strike flash just wide. Near the and
of the half the busy Peter Stewart saw his shat spin off a defender and out
for a comer.
Veteran goalkeeper Bobby Geddes took over From Ross McLean at the start of
the second period but it was Culter who were beginning to force the pace and
the hard working Mike Fraser was unlucky to see his shot cannon off a
defender and out for another corner. Ten minutes into the half Culter were
thrown a lifeline when Peter Stewart was felled in the box and he stepped up
to take the kick himself. Unfortunately he fired the ball straight a Bobby
Geddes who saved -with ease. Culter got a goal back their play
richly deserved when Duncan Ord turned and twisted in the box before
crossing to Mike Fraser who thundered a close range effort onto the
underside of the bar and into the back of the net. Culter then made a series
of substitutions with Mark Greig, Roddy Cameron, Alan Grant and Donnie Adam
replacing Andy Thain. Greig Davidson, Andy Cowell and Dave Calder. Ruddy
Cameron almost made an instant impact when he raced down the left and struck
a crisp drive which just carried beyond the far post with Bobby Geodes
scrambling. Duncan Ord then left the field far Danny Christie but it was old
hand Alan Grant who -made the telling contribution. Winning the ball in
midfield he exchanged an old fashioned one two with Mike Fraser before
curling a beauty past Bobby Geddes and into the back of the net.
Culter: Milne, Thain, Collie, Cowell, Rattray, Fraser, Davidson: Calder, Ord,
Stewart, Craik. Subs: Cameron, Adam, Smith, Greig, Grant, Christie

Moir Match
Marathon. The Moir Cup/Tough Cup Final of the Echt & District Summer
League played at Crombie Park, Culter on Friday 30 July 2004 turned out to
be a marathon match.
The Final was contested
by Garlogie and Durris with Garlogie being eventual winners. Crombie Park
was in wonderful condition - thanks to our Groundsmen George Aitken and
Gordon Laing- The Durris Manager was Culters former goalkeeper Allan Milne
who shocked me by saying how long ago his Culter playing days were - he
joined us in 1969 to replace Arthur Stuart and played until 1970/71.
Banchory lad Allan left us then an a transfer deal which saw him go to his
home team Banchory whilst Raymond Lovie came from Banchory to Culter.
The game had been due to
lack off at 7.04 pm but the Referee hadn`t turn up and a replacement Referee
had been arranged. He phoned just before 7.00 pm to say that he had been
held up in a traffic jam - at the Bridge of Don! It was decided that one
off the Linesmen would take over as Referee whilst -our Committee Member
Grant Home acted as Linesman to get the match under way. It kicked off at
around 7.15 pm and when the Referee arrived he took over, the Acting Referee
reverted to Linesman and Grant was relieved of his duty. Garlogie went ahead
thanks to a goal from their 15 year old right winger. Just before
half time a young Durris player went down in a tackle and broke his wrist.
The player lay near the touchline whilst an Ambulance was summoned and he
stayed there for about half an hour during which the game was suspended. The
Ambulance driver knew his way to Crombie Park - he was Culter man and former
Culter FC star player Iain 'Chuck" MacDonald.
Durris equalised early
in the second half whilst both teams scored many chances it ended 1 -1. In
spite of the evening turning -darker the full period of extra time was
played, 15 minutes each way. Garlogie went ahead but Durris equalised
to end the final 2 - 2. The penalty shoot-out took place in
fairly dark conditions with the initial result being 4- 4! It was a pity
that there had to be a loser- in the sudden death penalties the first two
were scored then Durris shot past the post and Garlogie netted the eventual
winner.
Fortunately there were
two Cups being presented. Senior Echt & District Member Bob Taylor made
his fine speech and presented the Tough Cup, in memory of Davie Tough, to
Runners-up Durris and I had the privilege of presenting my late father
Abbie's Cup, dating back to 1966, to Garlogie. It was now approximately 10
pm and quite dark - a real marathon match.
