CULTER IN BLOOM

MONDAY 12 April saw the inaugural meeting of this new subcommittee of the Community Council, which was attended by 12 enthusiastic volunteers. I was appointed chairman, Catherine Lacy Secretary and Nicola Hector treasurer. Members include the Bilsborrow, Cooper, Cowie, Ramseyer and Strachan families, Christine Mackie, Sandy Cook, Trudy McHardy, John Troup and Ann Watson..

We decided to focus our efforts this first year on North Deeside Road and have four main plans:

* Improve the entrances to the village at both ends

* Approach businesses and groups who have sizeable frontages to North Deeside Road to either convert part of their area to shrubs and flowers or purchase planters for the surfaced areas. We will help by sourcing the materials and planting out.

* Launch a fund to place hanging baskets on the lamp standards in the central area.

* Increase planting of autumn bulbs, particularly more snowdrops,

bluebells and crocus to naturalise in some existing green areas - we hope with help from Easter Anguston, the school and youth organisations.

So - we've made the plans and sown the seeds of Culter in Bloom, but as every keen gardener knows, that's only the start and there will be a lot of hard work - and a lot of help will be needed from many local businesses and people, both financial and in kind - before we see the blossoms!

We also hope that householders throughout the village will get into the spirit of Culter in Bloom by planting out their own colourful displays in front gardens, planters, baskets - every available space. We wait long enough for the summer round here; let's make it one for us (and visitors to our community) to remember!
