MANY of you might have followed the journey of
Judy, one of our house Co-ordinators, and her donkey Pedro as they attempted to
walk hundreds of miles through Scotland. I quote from Judy's journal:
We walked between 8 and 10
miles each day, starting around 9.30 a.m. and usually finishing between 4 p.m.
and 5 p.m. with a small rest at midday. Having light-weight electric fence
equipment, we were able to secure a camping area just about anywhere where water
and grass were available. Often we were welcomed to camp at farms, small Inns,
even people's back gardens.
Several times Pedro and I
slept together in barns and stables - with Pedro curled up in the straw next to
my feet. Everyone fell in love with Pedro everywhere we went, and presenting a
kind of vision from the past, people approached us with a combination of
disbelief, delight and admiration that in our time it is still possible to slow
down, pass quietly and peacefully through a landscape, see and fully absorb the
details and beauty of nature. However Pedro and my journey through Scotland came
to a somewhat abrupt end when, after reaching the Isle of Skye 6 weeks from our
start, it was discovered that his hooves were down beyond the point where he
could be shod.
Now Pedro -and Judy- are
safely back in Camphill ready for the pupils to return at the end of their
summer holidays and our Open Day on Saturday 25th September (2-5pm) when you
will have the opportunity to meet them both, and Pedro's mother Vicki, and
perhaps if you are young enough go for a donkey ride and experience some of what
Judy did on her travels. There will be much more to enjoy too and so we hope to
see as many of you as possible...
