TEDDIES FOR TRAGEDIES

Calling All Knitters!

CAN you help?

Could you spare an hour or two to knit a small teddy?

Doctors who treat children in the third world countries are asking for your help as they have found that children who have their own teddies to cuddle get better quicker than those who don’t have one. Each child keeps his or her own teddy and can take it home, so the doctors need a continual supply.

 Here are the instructions:

Double knitting wool, size 10 needles

4 colours required:

Main colour - for head and pawsTrouser colour

Jumper colour Scarf colour

• Cast on 10 stitches in main colour and knit 10 rows. Change to trouser colour and knit 30 rows (Make another leg the same).

• Now knit across all 20 stitches and work 16 rows.

• Change to main colour and stocking stitch (knit row, purl row) for head. Work until 5

1/2 inches.

• Change to jumper colour. Continue remainder of Teddy in reverse order. Stitch down sides of head.

• With the jumper colour pick up 8 stitches on either side of the neck join and knit 20 rows.

• Change to main colour and knit 10 rows (for paws). Do this on other side of neck for second arm and paw.

• Sew up your Teddy, leaving an opening at crotch for stuffing.

• Draw a thread around the neck; sew a diagonal line across both top corners of the head to create ears. Sew on a happy face.

Scarf: Cast on 60 stitches, knit 4 rows, cast off. Tie the scarf around Teddy’s neck and stitch to back of neck.

Enjoy making your Teddy and thank you.

A sick child is waiting!
