DEE-CIDERS

TAKING advantage of a ‘special break’ offer in April, we spent a few days exploring the Pitlochry area. En route via Glenshee, it was quite dull and misty but some decided to tackle Schiehallion while others climbed Craigower, a local marked walk. At the top of Craigower, unfortunately, the mist shrouded the hills indicated on the view pointer. The views from Schiehallion also were obscured, but those in the group made it to the top - well done! On the way down from Craigower, we stopped at The Moulin, a lovely olde worlde pub with real log fires burning, and admired the many beautiful gardens on the way.

Tuesday dawned bright and promising and after breakfast we set off on foot past the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, along the river to the Pitlochry Dam (with its fish ladder and viewing chamber to see salmon jumping) then along the River Tummel. We progressed on to the Pass of Killiecrankie , drinking in the history around us, with a break at the National Trust restaurant/shop for our picnic. Our return was by the path on the other side of the Tummel. The scenery was terrific and, with lots of stops, cameras were clicking.

On the third morning, we set off in cars for the Falls of Bruar , which again provided lovely walking and scenery. There’s certainly plenty pleasant walking in the Pitlochry area.

Since then, we have walked in Pitfichie Forest near Monymusk - no sunshine but no rain either, so quite enjoyable. Next walks were to:

• Glen Tanar - tired but happy after a long walk on a fine day

• Clachnaben - some went to the very top over the rocks, others preferred to rest at the base of the ‘pimple’

• Glen Ernan in Donside - a lovely day once again with marvellous views all around.

We finished the summer programme with a short walk in Blackhall, Banchory, returning to Drumoak for a BBQ.
