CULTER 50 + WALKING GROUP CULTER

January- March 2002

ON the 24th January, every kind of weather was hurled at the group on the Ellon to Auchnagatt old railway line. I believe there was some resemblance to the reputed weather at the time of Robbie Burns's birth was dealt out! 'A blast o' januar win"' or gales, accompanied by rain, hail, and snow! All in one day. It could only get better, but we have not been too lucky with the weather this year so far. Our next walks were to Mulloch, then The Barmekin where we trudged through deep heather and snow to enjoy the great view from the top of the hill. It was worth it of course. This was followed by a visit to Crathes on the 7th March, and despite a few showers we enjoyed the day and had some shelter among the trees. A favourite walk, and an enjoyable stop at the coffee shop, We had an excellent talk on our next outing by Mr Philip Glennie, at the Burn O'Vat. He advised us on safety while walking and several such topics, and he accompanied us on our walk, pointing out many interesting things we are inclined to take for granted. Although it was very foggy in Culter on the morning of the 4th April, we set out for Collieston and Forvie Sands. After a stop in Ellon for coffee, we headed for Collieston and the sun started to break through. A walk round the harbour area and up to the View Point and we were ready for the walk proper. We were so lucky with the weather as the sun came out and, although the sea was very rough, we had an excellent walk right to the Estuary where many species of birds could be seen. Altogether a great day out.
