CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

I AM writing this on a driech, cold and windy day thinking a lot of winter has still to come. However, looking back at what has been achieved for the community, over the past three months, warms me up somewhat.

The School Pitch: Meetings have continued to discuss options on the provision of

• football pitches for the youngsters during and out of school hours;

• a hard surface play area including basketball nets;

• a small area suitable for children keen on skateboarding.

(By agreement, a youth shelter was dropped from the proposals.)

The layout has been on view in the library and comments are welcome and, I believe, several have been received for discussion at the next group meeting.

Planning for Real: Following the first Planning for Real exercise held in Culter School on Saturday 2 October 2004, a11750 comments were grouped into subjects (Roads & Traffic; Transport; Safety; Learning; Environment; Community Facilities etc.) These were divided out amongst the Planning for Real Committee to work out action plans and to start tackling the problems:

To see if we were getting it right and give y ou a chance to prioritise what was being done, we had a second Planning for Real meeting in Culter School on Saturday 15th January.

This time we had about 250 cards and comments which our new Community Development Officer, Sharon McNutt, is analysing already.

(Her article is elsewhere in this Courier.)

The librarian involved in Planning for Real in Aberdeen South was telling me that Culter Library is due for a 'revamp' and we agreed it would be a good idea if there could be a notice board included where we could keep you up to date as your ideas were being worked on.

The 3Rs Project: On Saturday 22nd January 2005, representatives from Community Councils, School Boards, PTAs, Community Education Management Committees, Head teachers/class teachers, met in the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre at the invitation of Aberdeen City Council Education Department. We heard about school design from the needs of up-to-date teaching to safety, designing out crime, being light, airy, welcoming and flexible for the use of the children and also for community use. We all will look forward to the feedback and the first outline for the new Cults Academy.
