Home Up

Cults Cricket Club

AS I sit at my PC writing an article on cricket, outside it is cold and very wet. Nothing much has changed since the cricket season then.

Season 2004 was wet. There was hardly a weekend without rain. At the end of June/beginning of July there were three games in a row when I was finished and heading home by 4pm, absolutely soaked, and this in the height of the summer. Oh for the glorious summer of 2003!

Conversely, we also played more games at Allan Park Stadium in a wet summer than we have ever done before. This is due to the long term plan that Bill Davidson and I started 4 years ago to improve the Allan Park square and outfield. Working with Aberdeen City Council, being advised by Ken McCurdie of Aberdeenshire CC and sheer hard work, we are starting to produce decent cricket wickets. My thanks to all concerned.

Season 2004 was one of great success for all who played:

• 1st XI League,

• Aberdeenshire Cup - Paul Upjohn man of the match,

• Thompson Shield and Turriff Cup 2002 (sic) winners in some style.

• Runners up in Turriff Cup 2004 and Thistle Sport 7's.

• 1st XI Batting   Graeme Gillanders

• 1st XI Bowling  Hamish MacDougall

• Grade 1 Bowling          Hamish MacDougall

My personal congratulations to Hamish, a magnificent effort from the old man of the club. I am glad you are still playing - there is someone older than me.

• 2nd XI Bon-Accord Cup winners and threatened, until the last league game, to gain promotion to Grade.

We, as Cults 2nd XI, gave some sides a real fright and apart from the old guys, Phil Gill and me, this young side can only improve.

• 2nd XI Batting  Eddie Spearman and man of the match in the cup final • 2nd XI Bowling Neil Gillanders • Under 15 League winners

Congratulations to you all.
