DEE-CIDERS WALKING GROUP
WELL through October we were
still enjoying the most tremendous weather for the time of year. Wouldn’t it be
just wonderful if our summers were all like this year’s when raincoats,
umbrellas and cagoules were left in the cupboards.
With a couple of months on
holiday, we haven’t had many walks tucked under our belts, but we had a lovely
warm sunny day down Edzell way. What is it about Edzell that, when you go
through that wonderful granite arch, you feel you are going back in time? The
path by the Panmure Hotel (locally known as ‘The Fannie’) takes you down to
the river. I have never seen it so low. Boulders were sticking up out of the
water. You could have played a game jumping from one to the other to reach the
opposite bank - hut of course we didn’t! No doubt many of you have done the
‘Rocks of Solitude’ Walk and it is always a pleasure. The beech leaves were
just beginning to fall - glorious russet and yellow hues - strewn upon the Rocks
below and floating down the gently flowing water. After lunch, perched on the
Rocks, we scrabbled up to the road and Ron found a different way h through farm
paths. What thought would he a familiar w turned out to he so pleasant we co do
it again - if Ron remembers how he got there!
A more recent walk was up and o
the
Tomintoul Road
to Corgarff. You are very high up on that road, it is open and wild - it’s
heavenly. A gorgeous sunny day hut blowing what seemed like a Force 10 gale.
Clambering down from the mini-b
was an effort to start with. Heads down (you couldn’t keep them up) we walked
to the sanctuary the Ruined House, where managed to catch our
breath.
We set off again to lnchrory
our ultimate destination when, low and behold, here was a Land Rover coming
towards us. It was ‘culling of the deer’ season and were not allowed to go
further, back to our sanctuary for lunch a decision time. What to do now? Not to
he deterred, off we went Goodbrand’s, the shop in the wilds where purchases of
warm tops were made.
A lovely day out despite the
initial disappointment but Inchrory will tackled again out of 'deer season'.
And maybe we’ll get to stop at Goodhrand's again - for lentil soup and tea
only, of course!!
