CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

AS I write, the forecast is a cold snap and snow - good fun for the children but hell for the drivers. As I am one of the latter, I hope it won't be too bad!

Since I last wrote, we had our Christmas Cheese & Wine following those volunteers who so kindly give time to deliver the Couriers and those who help out at the Gala. It also gave the Community Council the opportunity to make two presentations.

The first was to Jim Ritchie in recognition of all the hard work he did for our community as a member then for ten years as Chairman. The other was to Ann Wakefield who has been a pillar of the Gala Committee for many years. Unfortunately she is now primary carer for two elderlV people - her mother and her motherin-law. Ann felt she could no longer take on the responsibility of being Coordinator of the Gala Committee. However, she is going to lend a hand when required, giving confidence to the new committee that there is someone there to consult.

I attended the Public Enquiry held in the Waterwheel to hear the evidence from Stewart Milne Holdings (SMH) and Aberdeen City Council (ACC) on whether or not the former should be allowed to build 100 houses in the wooded area up Contlaw Road . Culter Community Council (CCC) had objected because the schools are at capacity and the roads already choked with traffic, especially at commuting times.

Imagine my horror when 1 heard on the 4th day that SMH and the Roads Department (ACC). Had come to an agreement that, if the houses were permitted, then SMH would provide a Puffin Crossing at the front of Belinden Walk and traffic lights at the junction of Contlaw Road and N Deeside Road !

At the present time, the queue from the Bieldside traffic lights already reaches nearly to Contlaw Road at the busiest times! So what will an extra set of lights do? Our 'traffic expert' Doug Stewart (member of CCC) said the traffic would likely tail back into Culter, blocking also the junction at Milltimber Brae and holding back people wanting to go south or access the South Deeside Road. CCC has agreed to fight this if the Reporter in charge of the enquiry does give permission for the houses to be built.

Lastly, in his report sent to the January CCC meeting, our Community Bobby (CBO) Graeme Stewart, said that there would be changes in policing involving the way CBOs would work. They would have to carry out more divisional work and less Community work. The members of CCC have agreed to write to tell the Chief Constable expressing our concerns

and alarm at these changes. It has been noticeable in the past, when the bobbies are around, there are fewer disturbances and less crime.

PLANNING

SINCE I last wrote, more information has come to hand on items I wrote about in the last Courier.

1. There will no longer be a Public Enquiry about turning Culter House into 13 flats plus two or three houses in the gardens. The planning application has been withdrawn because the property has changed hands - but to whom and for what, we don't know as yet.

2. The extension to the mobile phone tower and cabin, at the very top of School Road , has been approved.

3. The Reporter decided, after his visit to Standish Cottage, The Bush, that replacement planting should be done but that the owner need not upgrade

Other concems:

a) The members of CCC were concerned about the proposed Equestrian Centre at Anguston. I had written on behalf of the members to object to a house in the Green Belt, which would be attached, but that CCC would not object to the Centre in principle. Local residents were expressing concerns about the narrowness of the road and the size, and numbers, of vehicles (horse boxes, etc.), which would be using it. The Planning Committee will be making a site visit before deciding.

b) There has been a Planning Application for a three-storey block for 4 bed-sits and leisure facilities to be attached to the 'young adults with special needs' house in Craigton Grove but lying within the wooded grounds of Hamewith. CCC has objected to the size of the building and the loss of the trees. (If you use the lane/little roadie between Brighton Place and Craigton Crescent, you will see that quite a number of trees have already been cut down.)
