PAVEMENTS IN CULTER

AS SOMEONE who works with the elderly, many of whom are disabled and dependent on the use of wheelchairs to get around, I constantly am reminded of the shocking state of the pavements in Culter when I take residents on outings.

Culter is a lovely village blighted, not only by the uneven, rough surfaces of the pavements and roads, but by inconsiderate drivers who park their vehicles anywhere they wish with complete disregard for pavements and other road users.

In addition to this, the refuse collectors seem to deposit the wheelie bins in the middle of the pavements making it very difficult for young mums with prams! pushchairs, or carers with the elderly in wheelchairs, or sight impaired residents, to negotiate the route.

Recently I took a resident from Eastleigh Care Centre to the Ploughman and back. It was an exceptionally lovely day marred by the route I had to negotiate. If it was uncomfortable for me, try to imagine how uncomfortable it was for the resident. The cross over at the bottom of Cairn Road , beside the Furain Guest House, almost beat me.

Possibly the most frequented venue for mums and the elderly is the Post Office. Several times I have had to step aside to allow a driver to PARK his or her vehicle on the pavement outside. This is unacceptable and I would be grateful if the road users and maintenance workers would take heed to improve the situation immediately, before a serious accident occurs.
