GRAMPIAN DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETYJAPANESE gardens, magic lanterns, Vermeer’s paintings and an Andy Goldsworthy masterclass are just some of the tempting offerings made to the 200 members of the Grampian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (GDFAS) in their monthly programme of events and lectures. The lecturers are experts in their chosen field of the Arts and many travel extensively at home and abroad lecturing to Universities, The National Trust and to groups such as ours. The lectures, illustrated by slides and sometimes music, last about an hour and are followed by members’ questions. Subjects range from Gaudi’s architecture to the American Country house and the treasures of the Sutton Hoo ship burial. Future lectures will look at Art Nouveau, the woodcarvings of Grinhing Gibbons and the paintings of Van Gogh. Additional visits and study days have included presentations on Scottish silver and pottery, Oriental rugs and textile restoration, whilst practical workshops have taught Suminagashi (Japanese paper marbling), etching and screen printing. Members also have the opportunity to take part in volunteer projects such as the current research into furniture makers of the NE of Scotland or a group, which we plan to start this year, that will help conserve an historic library. Lectures take place at the Queen’s Hotel on the second Wednesday of every month (summer excepted) at 7.30p.m. Pre lecture drinks and bar suppers are available. For information call 01224 825633.
