58TH ABERDEEN (CULTER) SCOUT GROUP

ALL sections of the 58th Aberdeen Scout Group, which includes Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures, are very active with full programmes. We have recently recruited new leaders for the Cub section following the retirement of Ann Harcombe and have some new Group Committee members -including our new secretary, Richard McKenzie, following the stepping down of Jane Findlater. Many thanks to both Ann and Jane for many years of energy and commitment, and to our new leaders and committee members for their welcome support!

Congratulations to three Scouts from the 58th: Duncan Watt, Kevin Dow and Stephen Mathers, together with two Leaders: Darryl Munro and Trevor Nicol who have all been accepted to participate in the world jamboree in Thailand in December 2002 and January 2003. An experience of a lifetime is in prospect, after some serious fundraising!

The highlight of the year for the Ventures was the visit to Poland for the Venture Explorer Belt award. Their challenge was to work in pairs and travel 160km between fixed points in Poland with full backpacks, without resorting to public transport and with very limited cash.

This was a challenging, stretching and inspiring experience for all who participated and everyone got to know the country and its people far better than through a normal visit!

The Scouts had a great summer camp at Glen Tanar with activities including abseiling, wind surfing, gorge walking and mountain hiking. A recent hiking weekend was held in the Carngorms for older Cubs and Scouts. They were based at the Inverey Youth Hostel and everyone enjoyed themselves despite getting completely soaked both days!

The Beavers are collecting Evening Express "Children 2000" tokens in order to buy additional equipment. All Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures families are requested to cut out as many of these tokens as possible and pass to Aileen or to any other Leader.
