INTRODUCING THE ROTARY CLUB OF ABERDEEN-DEESIDE

ROTARY is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 29,000 Rotary clubs.

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non- religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service: in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programmes for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is 'Service Above Self'.

The Rotary Club of Aberdeen-Deeside is the youngest Club in the Scotland North district. It received its official Charter in March 2001. The Club's catchment area includes Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter. Despite the Club being new, it has embarked on activities in various avenues: this year it organised the Primary School's Quiz, got involved in Cults Clean-up Day, sponsored Young Musician of Year award, assisted the Voluntary Service Overseas organisation and was present at the MBC festival with a wheel of fortune, bouncy castle, face painting and other activities. The Club currently has 30 members.

The Rotary Club of Aberdeen-Deeside meets every Wednesday night at the Cults Hotel. Interesting speakers are invited to address the Club on a regular basis. If you want to know more about the Rotary organisation, do check the international Rotary website {www.rotary:org) or the Scotland North Rotary website {www.districtl0l0.org.uk). Rotarians come from all walks of life but are bound together by a common desire to help those less able to help themselves.
