Culter Gala 2006

FIRSTLY, I would like to thank everyone in Culter and the surrounding areas for supporting this year's gala and giving generously. I am pleased to say we have raised £3,700 during all our Gala events, including Gala Day - it couldn't have been done without your support. These funds will be distributed later in the year to those local groups that apply for a donation. This year we also intend to contribute towards purchase of Christmas lights for the village, which the Community Council is looking into at present. Please see the separate notice in this Courier regarding applying for Gala funds.

We had some very successful Gala Events. Our Race Night was extremely well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening, which concluded with a disco - it certainly got the community spirit going. It also raised a lot of money for the Gala funds and race organisers, Kyber Pass, who donated their fee to disadvantaged children.

Other events included another successful Quiz Night, organised by Ian "Kipper" McKenzie - the biggest turnout for some time. Culter's very own Arts & Craft Exhibition ran for three days at the Heritage Hall and gave our local Culter artists the chance to show off their talents. Thanks to the hard workers at the Heritage Centre who organised the refreshments.

Gala Day - despite the mixed weather - was very successful. We had a wonderful street procession of floats and vintage vehicles, led by the Pipe Band. We were pleased to have Kirsten Gove (Grampian News) open the Gala and judge all the competitions. Callum Stuart (Heritage and Gala) did a splendid job as compere this year and kept the whole thing going with his local knowledge of Culter. Entertainment on the day consisted of

  • CASKET's African Drumming Section,

  • 16 year old Danny McGregor performing some brilliant Brazilian soccer skills,

  • Ninja fighters and

  • kids' races.

Culter Boys Club arranged a 7-a-side football match between two young teams who were playing for the Zoe Skea Shield, in honour of the popular little girl who loved football. The game ended in an exciting 3-3 draw The Boys Club intend to make this an annual event at the Gala. The Culter and District Pipe Bands did an excellent job of performing for us throughout the afternoon and our Gala Raffle was a great success with some excellent prizes this year. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes, and bought tickets. First prize of £200 went to Culter postie Ricky Will - congratulations.

Our long serving committee member, Steve Davidson, has decided to finally hang up his Gala hat after a countless number of years. Thank you Steve for all the hard work and knowledge you have put into the event over the years - you will be sorely missed.

The Gala Comtnittee was saddened to hear of the death of one of our ex-committee and gala helpers, Paul Cowie. Paul always turned up to lend a hand during the Gala period and his input was always greatly appreciated. He will be fondly remembered by us all.

We still hope to run an indoor family fun afternoon possibly in October to raise further funds for the Christmas lights. We plan to make the event fun for all the family, including bingo, a beetle drive, a disco and karaoke. Look out for posters and venue details later in the year.

Personally I would like to thank all the present Gala Committee forgiving up their free time to organise this annual event, and working incredibly hard in the process. It has been a pleasure to work with such a nice bunch of people - each and everyone of whom has done his/her bit in making this year's gala a success. Without them, the Culter Gala would simply not take place.

Our Gala AGM takes place on Tuesday 12th September, at the Pop-in, North Deeside Road, 7.30pm. If you feel you have any new ideas for the Gala or would like to join the committee please come along - everyone welcome.
