Community Council Elections

COMMUNITY Council elections in Aberdeen are held every three years and the nest election is due to be held on Thursday 26th October 2006. All Community Councils in the city will cease to exist at midnight on Wednesday 25th October 2006.

Monday 21st August 2006: Official notice inviting nominations for election to Community Councils will be placed in the Evening Express.

Thursday 21st September (4pm): Closing date for receipt of completed nomination forms.

Wednesday 27th September (4pm): Closing date for withdrawal of nominations.

I will be sent a supply of nomination forms but these also will be available at various public buildings throughout the City.

Completed forms should be sent to:

Returning Officer, Election Unit, Balgownie 1, Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen as soon as possible but not later than 4pm Thursday 21st September 2006.

Culter Community Council is made up of twelve members and it is really important that these places are filled. If more nominations are received than are places available, then an election will take place on Thursday 26th October from 5.30pm to 8pm. This has not happened for many years, but it would show an upsurge of interest in our area and be good for democracy. Please do give this serious thought.

Meetings are held monthly in the Pop-in, North Deeside Road, and an earlier start is being tried (7pm instead of 7.30pm) but it is up to the incoming Community Council to decide times, dates etc. Also to cater for people who have commitments on certain evenings, we meet on a rotation of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This seems to have worked for CCC in recent years.

For anyone who is thinking about becoming a Community Councillor, an information session will be held in the Town House on Tuesday 12th September from 2pm to 8pm. Potential Community Councillors can drop in at any time and be given information about Community Councils and ask any questions.

In addition, it is proposed to hold an induction course for recently appointed Community Councillors and a workshop for Community Council Treasurers in November/December 2006.
