Blooming marvellous

This summer our workload has expanded greatly. In addition to planting out our "usual" 30 containers around the village and arranging the "usual" 20 plus hanging baskets for lamp posts on North Deeside Road, our team has been busy introducing some colourful new features. Four in particular deserve a mention:

  • the raised flower bed by the village sign at the east end,

  • a further 30 small barrels outside homes on the wider pavements and at some business premises on North Deeside Road,

  • 18 mangers on boundary walls nearer the shopping area and, last but not least,

  • the brightly-coloured little wooden train made of whisky barrels - complete with its floral "plume of smoke" - at the bottom of St Ronan's Drive, which reminds us that once upon a time a train really did stop in Culter'.

We are indebted to all our sponsors and supporters, without whose help we could not have delivered these new schemes. This year we are particularly grateful for support from the Balmoral Group and from B & Q, Garthdee, who gave us a Better Neighbourhood Grant in the form of merchandise from their store. We will publish a full list of our financial sponsors later this year - but let's not forget the dedicated help of all the many committee members and property and business owners who are keeping the containers watered over the summer, making this a real community effort.

 Environmental extras

We have recently added to our constitution the aim to make environmental improvements in the village, and back in June our member Carol Page gallantly spearheaded this by organising a well supported litter collection day in the area of the Johnston Gardens bus terminus. Perhaps you saw her advertising the event on our stand at the Gala - and well done to the parents and kids who volunteered! Increased focus on improving our environment in every way will become a regular feature of our activities. With help from Councillor Pam Macdonald we have managed to get Aberdeen City Council to apply a lick of paint on same of our much-vandalised bus shelters - but not yet on our ageing and rather decrepit public benches.

 Coronation Road

Along with Culter Community Council Paths Group, Aberdeen City Council

A great turn out for Carol’s first Litter Clear-Up at Johnston Gardens

and Aberdeen Countryside Project, we have been discussing ideas for improving leisure access for walkers to the green space downhill from the school sports field and adding some wild flower areas, trees and shrubs to this area and some seats on which people can relax and enjoy it. We are still awaiting a plan of the detailed proposal from Aberdeen City Council but meantime have put in an application for a grant from ACP to create a new footbridge across the little burn which flows through the area. This bridge will be accessible directly from Coronation Road rather than via the Health Centre car park.

 Neighbourhood Awards

Having gained a certificate of merit from Beautiful Scotland in Bloom for our efforts last year, we have also applied to be assessed for an award this year - so if in August you see some of our members wandering around the village along with a stranger with a clipboard you will know what is going on? And if you want to know more about our plans or to offer help or suggestions to us at any time, please contact our secretary Catherine Lacy at 1 Brighton Place, Tel 733710 or send us an e mail via our website www.culterinbloom.org.uk.

Tim and Helen Ramseyer plant out our “whisky Train” – the flowers were kindly donated by Fox Lane Nurseries.

While the majority of people were enjoying the beautiful display of flowers throughout the village, many of the tubs and containers were vandalised. The damage was mostly from opposite the Post Office down to the Whisky Train at the east entrance to the village.

It seems amazing that nobody saw or heard anything. Please, if you have any information, contact a member of the Culter in Bloom Committee or the Police.
