CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY A different format this year for the Culter Theatre Club's Christmas show: a play instead of a pantomime. Surprisingly, this show had not been performed in the North-east despite the wonderful characters and story. CTC's rendition proved a big hit with the audience, young and old and all four performances were sold out before opening night. The show was colourful, fast and filled with special effects. The biggest was how to make Roald Dahl's horrid and spoilt youngsters disappear the way he describes it in the book. The rubbish chute, Mike TV's dissolving into a million tiny pieces and re-appearance live on screen, the child-swallowing chocolate river, and the wobbly blueberry that once was Violet Beauregarde got roars of laughter and standing ovations on most nights. The show contained many new faces and the wealth of acting talent in Culter is apparent. It was wonderful to be able to give those who can't, won't or don't sing a chance at having a lead part on the strength of their acting. The additional musical treat before and after the play - performance rights would not allow any songs within the play - was appreciated too. The singers showed their talents and sang their hearts out. The show was produced by a team of largely new crew. They did a fantastic first job and we are hoping to see many of them back, as well as anyone else out there who is interested in the backstage work that goes into producing a show of any kind. All in all, Charlie was a great show thanks to the actors, crew and the audiences that came out to support it. Pauline de Koning ON reflection Culter Theatre Club had a very successful 2005. This year we brought you three productions in all. - Wit, Wine & Wensleydale - HONK! - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory All three productions proved very popular indeed and thank you to all those who came along and supported us. So what does Culter Theatre Club have in store for 2006? Well we don't really know. The AGM will have been held by the time the Courier goes to print so we will know more then. But certainly we can promise thrills, spills and a bucket load of laughs. Whatever's planned, rest assured you'll be the first to know............ ok! ok! maybe not first but definitely second. Post Script. The annual AGM was held on Tuesday 24th January. Despite a very poor turnout, a new committee was formed and has a holding brief to ensure the continuation of the club. At this moment in time there are no plans for any shows this year, but if there is anyone out there with ideas, time and commitment please contact Alison Skinner on 734371, and she will pass on information to the new committee.
