Vandals defeated
YOU may have seen some evidence of vandalism on our containers on the
main road. Don't be concerned - we will not let these mindless acts
deter us, but please report to the police anything you see or hear about
them - the perpetrators can be caught. It was gratifying recently to
hear the justice meted out to one culprit, who was prevailed upon to
"donate" £50 to the Community Council to make good the damage done!
Ten priorities for 2006
The November meeting of our committee set this ambitious ten-point plan
for our work in 2006. If you have any comments or further ideas for us,
please contact any member of the committee or post your thoughts on our
interactive website
Maintain or improve our current standards with planters;
This will mean either purchasing or finding sponsors for more
containers,and
perhaps using different types
Investigate alternatives to our current arrangements for hanging
baskets;
We pay the Aberdeen City Council nearly £50 per basket for a three
months display. If we supply and plant them ourselves, can we find
volunteers or suppliers who will maintain them for less? And what about
winter baskets?
Improve "street furniture";
We are let down by some tatty bus shelters and benches. Will Aberdeen
City Council improve them for us, or should we seek sponsors and do it
ourselves?
Create more permanent features for year round attractiveness;
We need to improve the environment in more striking ways than just by
small containers - for example by a feature at the entrance to the
village, planting trees and making paths or adopting small areas of
waste ground.
Keep up the focus on North Deeside Road;
We all use the main road and the people who live there can cheer us all
up and enhance the image of the village by their displays. We would like
to help them by encouraging and subsidising containers, baskets, plants
and trees.
Involve young people and other volunteers in our schemes;
We've already had help from the Guides,
Bill Cooper & Jim Farquhar set about the Autumn bulb planting

Brownies and Rotary Club. Maybe the nurseries, school, clubs and other
organisations could help? We will make contact with them and find out!
Work closely
with our sponsors and supporters;
We appreciate the interest and support we enjoy. We want to show them
our appreciation and encourage continued participation.
Encourage
businesses to enhance their own frontages;
Ultimately, individual businesses can make the biggest difference to the
appearance of our main street. We will advise and assist them in any way
we can. Research and seek funds/grants for specific projects;
Maybe Landfill tax or lottery funding schemes can increase our reach and
enable us to tackle more ambitious projects. Let's investigate!
Enter the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom Neighbourhood
Awards scheme again; This enables us to gain valuable external advice
and ideas for further improvement.
A Free shrub
We value highly
the support we receive from generous Culter residents and this year we'd
like to give them something back! For any donation of £10 or more to our
funds received by 15th March we will be giving the donor a free shrub to
plant in their own garden! The shrub we've chosen is Amelanchier
Lamarckii (the June Berry). Send your donations to our treasurer Nicola
Hector 8 St Ronan's Drive, to play your own part in beautifying Culter -
in two different ways!
