Culter Mills Club

Mill Closure

TWENTY five years ago this coming February, Culter Mills Paper Company closed its door to production for the last time. Paper had been produced continuously on the same site since 1751, a span of 230 years. The Mill provided employment for many local people who still live in and around the village. That fateful day, significantly on February 14th, caused much furore and still is the subject of much debate by ex-employees and their families. Fortunately almost all former workers found employment but not all.

To commemorate the occasion, the Mill Club intends holding some sort of reunion and perhaps an exhibition of old artefacts and photographs some time in February 2006. We hope to enlist the help of the Heritage Centre as they have a wealth of memorabilia to hand. Should any former employee or their families have any ideas or think they can contribute in some way please contact Ian "Kip" McKenzie on 734504 or 07929 748599 or by e-mail at kipsley @uku.co.uk.

Bowling Section/Old Club

We have known for some time now that "Old Club" is in a serious state of disrepair. The committee has sought professional advice from a number of sources and we are indebted principally to Duncan Moir (son of Albert) of McLeod & Aitken for his persistence in this matter. Plans are afoot to look at the various options open to us including full or partial replacement of the facility, which was first constructed in the 1920s. Watch this space for further details
