AWPR Announcement

Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, has announced his decision for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route to go through the community of Milltimber. The CulterNET poll showed only 5% support for this, the "Milltimber Brae", route. In addition to the published 5 alternative routes , an additional route  linking the Netherley Road to the Milltimber Bridge, passing close by the Kirkton of Maryculter has also been proposed.

What would your decision be on the proposed route of the WPR (the bypass)?

Armistice Day Concert

Memories of 1945 returned to Culter, for one night only, at Heritage Hall on the 11 November- Armistice Day.. Members and volunteers of the Trust were suitably disguised, in a variety of period clothing, to welcome guests for an evening of entertainment to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War 2.

The War Memorial

The evening began with a selection of violin and accordion music from Susan Simpson and Mhairi Shand.

This was followed by the Granite City Barbershop Singers, who got the audience singing along in (at least) 4 part harmony!.

Wartime rationing still being in force, teatime included the notorious Spam sandwiches.  The raffle prizes were eagerly fought over - bars of soap, bunches of carrots - and of course, Spam!  Doris Rothnie almost demanded a Ministry of Intelligence Investigation- had they put the "700's" tickets in the draw?  After the interval, the Popular Scottish Comedian of the 30's and 40's, Harry Gordon (Callum Stuart), accompanied by his long-standing pianist Alice Stephenson (Winnie Foster) , turned up to sing a compendium of his well-known works- "The Auldest Aiberdonian", "The Story that I Started at the Kirk Soiree"  and many more.

"Manson's" Shop

A generation of Culter "loons & quines" ( and probably the generation before them ) will be sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs Manson, who has died at the age of 94. "Manson's" shop which is now the left handside of "Jumbo's" was a magnet for Culter village kids who spent their sweetie money there.

How many Sports mixtures did you get for a penny? How much did you get back for an empty Hay's lemonade bottle?.  In those days, you could even nip down for a packet of cigarettes for your Da ( or in my case, a packet of "Old Holburn" tobacco).

When Mr & Mrs Manson retired, the shop and the Co-op Bakery next door was converted, into a larger Newsagency, by the Rolph's.   James and Williamina  Manson were right there at the centre of Culter life, for many decades, and we offer our grateful thanks.  Williamina died on Saturday 27th August 2005 at the Overdon Care Home in Kintore. A Service took place at Peterculter Parish Church on Thursday 1 September at 2.30pm.

If you remember the Manson's, please visit the Forum and leave your memories for others to share.

Cults Shops  ADVERTS

Do you have  memories of some of these shops, and their proprietors, in the Cults area?. Can you date them?  The Cults Bowling Club had been in existence for 38 years, having occupied the same site for 30 years. "The nicely kept green stands close to the north side of the railway  line, near Westerton Road".   Please share your stories in the forum.
