Milltimber from the end of the B979 Netherley Road.

A new foal enjoys the tranquility of a misty Dee Valley... well, possibly until the year 2012 ...

AWPR ARCHIVE

On the 7th October, George Thomas revealed in the CulterNET forum that Milltimber Brae had been chosen as the proposed route of the AWPR. This was weeks before the "official" announcement was made , on the 1st December, by Transport Minister Tavish Scott.

Below, CulterNET suggests  the alternatives which are likely through the "corridor". Vote in the mini-poll or leave your comments in the Forum.

THE BLUE ROUTE

On Oldman Hill, Maryculter - A single carriageway "Spur"  from Stonehaven  meets the Milltimber dual-carriageway.

On the right the spur road passes the Kirktown of Maryculter just to the west of the graveyard. Around 30 homes are demolished on Milltimber Brae. A large roundabout complex sits to the South of the Milltimber Bridge. No junctions are planned on the spur road- one roundabout at the Stonehaven end and another roundabout at the Maryculter end!

Southward, the road snakes past Maryculter East School, the Mill of Monquich and  skirts the west side of Red Moss Hilton.

To the North, the Milltimber Brae section runs parralel to the B979 and intersects the A93 at Bellenden Walk and Culter House Road.

THE GREEN ROUTE

This option would be a proposed upgrading of the existing B979. In the main, following the existing run of the road, straightening out the bend at Hairyhillock and then reaching an interchange section just to the east of Maryculter School and Mains of Altries. At this point, it would  merge with the road from Charlestown which arrives via Burnhead and Polston Farm. The route would proceed northwards by Oldman Hill, just to the east of Parkhead Farmhouse (above), following the line of trees at Rosebank Cottage, Maryculter. It crosses the Inch of Culter to run through the western section of the Camphill Estate. The A93 junction is crossed east of Avondow and heads northward  between Kippie Lodge and the International School.

THE RED /PINK ROUTE

This proposal would use the Milltimber Brae/ Bellenden Walk model at the North end. The main intersection with the Stonehaven spur, however, is located much further south. This would lessen the impact of the junction within an "Area of Landscape Significance". The big "red" roundabout would be located to the south of Cleanhill Wood, where it joins up with the Charlestown road.  To the South, it passes Polston Farm, heads westward to Invercrynoch and Westside, Sauchenshaw then passing between Red Moss and Balnagubs. The Red route can continue by Backhill, South Cookney anf Hill of Muchalls- or alternatively a PINK route would take it further to the east  by Meadowfield, Montgatehead and Cantlaymills.

THE YELLOW ROUTE

The Yellow route would be the most easterly proposal. The North end would be similar to the RED route, crossing the A93 at Bellenden Walk. The big Yellow Interchange, located to the south of Cleanhill Wood would take the road past the east of Stranog Hill and then directly south by Rothnick, Stoneyhill, South Cookney and Hill of Muchalls.

AWPR ARCHIVE

1 December 2005

An announcement has been made by Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, that the route selected will cross the River Dee at  Milltimber Bridge.  An additional section connecting the A90 from Stonehaven to Maryculter is also included in the plan. Details of the planned dual routes do not appear to be available until sometime in 2006.

It would appear that many residential homes around the Milltimber Brae Junction are destined to be bulldozed. Initial plan for crossing the Dee at Maryculter also showed a 300m viaduct-type crossing spanning the Dee valley.  The surprise additional proposal, which was not part of the initial consultation is an A90 "spur" route which follows , for the most part, the line of the Netherley Road. This appears to branch off the present line of the  road at Oldman Hill, passing to the immediate west of Kirkton of Maryculter graveyard and joining the Charleston/Milltimber Brae section on the south side of the river.

CONSULTATION 2005

The current consultation period for the proposed Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route runs until 29th April 2005.    Details and plans of the five proposed routes can be found at www.awpr.co.uk .  These are:

  • The "Pitfodels" Route.
  • The "Murtle" Route.
  • The "Milltimber Brae" Route.
  • The "Charleston/Peterculter" Route
  • The "Stonehaven/Peterculter" Route.
