1940s

Culter constructed a private football pitch, Crombie Park, which was opened on 3 May 1848. Originally, the pitch was on the same site, adjacent to the current one, but it was gradually being filled in by the Culter Mills Paper Company who owned the land. The Club already had secured a 10 year lease from Culter Estate commencing  from Whitsunday 1946 at One Shilling per annum (five pence!). At the outset a railway carriage was purchased for use as a pavilion. This acted as good changing rooms for 32 years from 1948 to 1980 (with several modifications over the years).

A sign of difficult times in the early years is reflected by an extract from the Club’s minutes of the Committee Meeting held on Sunday 6 September 1953:-

“As the team were in need of pants and stockings it was decided to leave this over till next Sunday. In the meantime the Secretary was to try Thom’s Bakery for white bags for making pants”.
